The Parental Model
(Adapted from Paulo Freire’s Five Standards)
Excerpt from Natural Success, By The Rev. Gilberto Rosado, Chapter 5 – Child
Nurturing
Applied to the family setting, the five standards would be:

Parents and child working together in all things of the family and the
household - Involving the child in all areas and exposing them to
decision-making processes allows the child to learn how to deal with
problems of life and to solve them.
If the parents are skilled at problem-solving the child will learn these
proclivities as well. All parents
should seek the aid of a cognitive mentor in order to ensure that they are
modeling correctly for their children.

Teaching
the language of problem solving in life – exposing them to reading
relevant to problems being handled in the home or at school.
This is a means to help them both academically and in
life-problem solving skills.
The same material they read concerning local family issues can be
the basis of their school essay writing and book reports – you kill two
birds with one stone.

Connecting schoolwork to problems
at home and in the neighborhood.
This is a great way to teach children the reasoning of right doing in
the home. They learn that 2+2
=4 in school, but don’t show that reasoning in their behaviors and habits at
home. This also forces the
parents to do the same – the original factor in their lack of sense is
directly tied to the parent’s lack of it manifestly.

Involving children in the “big” decisions of the household allows them to
practice their thinking and academic skills to the maximum.
Assigning them to figure out the math to
financial / budgeting issues allows them to use their math learning in real
life situations.
Even if you have to make up a scenario for them
to engage – it is a good practice.
Other issues of life can be introduced by
politics, the news, the economy and family issues that come up from time to
time.
Even in the child’s own life, there arises great
challenges for them that they should be challenged to handle through their
learning.

Family conferencing
concerning the problems of life and allowing the child to opine and
challenging them to reason the issues through.
The relationship in the home between parent and child should be
one of dialogue. There should be
always a teaching when the child is in the presence of the parent.
The parent must always remember that the child is learning of
them. Modeling and dialogue is
key.
